WTF? (Introductions)

You may have heard the story on NPR about The Conet Project, a 4 CD set of recordings of numbers broadcasts on shortwave radio, recorded, edited, compiled, and produced by Akin Fernandez in London. For those that haven't heard of these spook shows, here's some aticles and websites that give the background in great detail. For starters I reccomend this one:

www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...g2.html

Here are some others:

www.straightdope.com/classic...330.html

www.dxing.com/numbers.htm

www.simonmason.karoo.net/page32.html

On the other hand, there is a lot of information I cant make much sense out of, mainly because it assumes too much background and technical knowlege for me to follow clearly. I created this tribe in order to learn how to understand these specialized websites, use my radio more effectively and to find and listen in on the broadcasts myself.

I purchased a very cheap SW radio ("SW" stands for "Short Wave" to us radio geeks), and could only get whistles and static. I'm disappointed, to say the least, but not dismayed. I will post more specific technical questions later, but I will let this stand as my introduction.

This seems to be a site devoted to shortwave radio in general.

oh damn... I just noticed that the entire set is available for download from archive.org. I'm still glad I have my second pressing CD set, but for anyone who wasn't sure if they wanted to drop the $$ to own this, now you don't have to.

I've been an enthusiast of the Conet Project since I bought the first edition back in 1998 - I subsequently went out and bought a couple shortwave radios on eBay (one is a beautiful vintage Hallicaster from the 50s) and have listened but never found any numbers stations...

I was loading The Conet Project onto my iTunes last night to listen to on my iPod, just did a search to see if there were any Conet tribes here and I found this one, so I joined:

I invited a few new members: they've joined.

Eleggua invited me. I'm here because we are considering launching a pirate radio station at Burning Man this year as a part of the Borg2 infiltration team and I'm interested in the impact of shortwave and its political uses throughout the second 1/2 of the 20th c.

Having access to foreign broadcasts widened my understanding of the world while growing up in remote Montana. It was partially due to my avid listening of the CBC radio in the 80's that I ended up in the cultural spheres I did.

I do recall being awoken by the strange crackly signals and strange bleepy code-like sounds. Not sure if it was a good idea to subject my subconscious to all this....

I can say that I have heard a numbers station or two.
Never in the usual shortwave bands though.
I think the last one I heard was at about 8.4MHz
but it was just accidental and a spanish female voice
              speaking numbers only.
